Meet Your 2018 Honorary Race Chair,
Susan G. Komen Wisconsin is pleased to announce that Rhonda Hilmershausen will serve as the Honorary Race Chair for the 21st Annual Komen South Central Wisconsin Race for the Cure.
Rhonda is currently a Brand Journalist for TDS Telecommunications Corp. On March 8, 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. A month later, on April 11, after several surgeries, she was deemed cancer-free. This year marks her 5th year of survivorship.
Rhonda not only participates and fundraises for the Komen South Central Wisconsin Race for the Cure, but she is an active volunteer. She has been involved with the planning and execution of Komen Wisconsin's fundraising event at Smart Motors for the last several years, and she visits the Komen Madison office to deliver smiles and words of positivity.
Her story of struggle, perseverance and triumph is truly inspiring. Read her story below.
What was your breast cancer journey like?
To say I was scared in the beginning was an understatement. I endured three surgeries, 20 weeks of chemotherapy, 6 weeks of daily radiation, and an additional year of Herceptin infusions every 3 weeks. When I shaved my head, it all became very real to me. I thought my identity had been taken from me because I felt I looked generic. But that's not what happened. If anything, I found myself again. I found out how strong and stubborn I really am. I found out that the people in my life now – and from the past – are truly selfless and just want to help no matter how big or how small. I found out that nothing matters more than family. My husband and my daughters were my rocks and showed me true, unconditional love. Was it hard? Yes. Did I have a couple pity parties along the way? Yes. But I found many little rainbows along the way that helped me keep my eye on the prize at the end.
Why have you agreed to be the Honorary Race Chair for 2018?
When I was first diagnosed, my friend immediately told me we were going to the Race for the Cure even if she had to push a gurney with me strapped to it. That first year was almost indescribable. The Race is a love fest. It's a sisterhood and brotherhood of people who are survivors, know survivors, support survivors, or who have lost forever fighters. I am humbled to help bring people together to continue this fight against breast cancer and to celebrate all that Komen does for our communities.
Why is fundraising for Komen Wisconsin important to you?
I have raised approximately $25,000 for Komen Wisconsin and this year my goal is another $10,000. Komen gave me hope at that first walk when I didn't know what to expect in the beginning. Now, having volunteered and been a part of what they do, I’ve seen how the money raised is used. I’ve learned so much about this complex disease and I've had family members use the services provided through Komen grants. No woman – or man – should EVER have to go without preventative tests, or treatments because they can't afford to have breast cancer. It wasn't their fault to begin with, and the disease is suffrage enough without adding financial burden to it.
